Kate Huntington’s Playlist

This is from a guest post I did last year for Catie Rhodes’ Celebrity Author Playlist series.

Since I’m older than dirt and my musical tastes are equally antiquated–John Denver, anyone?–I shared the playlist of my protagonist in the Kate Huntington mystery series. She’s no spring chicken herself but her older favorites are ones that have stood the test of time. And she’s got a few more up-to-date selections as well.

(This post also gives some of Kate’s back story.)

First here is a photo, by the very talented Nevit Dilmen, that represents how I see Kate in my mind’s eye, especially in her younger years.

Kate was born Kathleen O’Donnell in 1967. Being of Irish-American heritage and coming of age in the 1980’s, of course Kate is a U2 fan. Her all time favorite song is A Beautiful Day.

U2 – A Beautiful Day

Kate’s second favorite band during her college years was Guns N’ Roses. Their song, Sweet Child O’ Mine, always makes her think of her childhood – years filled with love, laughter and a fair share of bickering as she and three siblings grew up in a three-bedroom bungalow in Baltimore.

Guns N’ Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine

Second runner-up for Kate’s favorite U2 song is With or Without You. The year this song came out, Kate was a junior in college and she was dating Ed Huntington. Ed adored her, but Kate found his laid-back personality rather boring. They broke up their senior year. After graduation, Kate went off to graduate school, leaving Ed with a sore heart and an appreciation for U2.

In 1993, Kate and Ed ran into each other at a U2 concert (during their Zoo Tour). Kate saw this as a sign that she should give him another chance. Over dinner the next night, he admitted that he played With or Without You quite often, while thinking about the good times they’d had in college. The line “and you give, and you give, and you give yourself away” particularly reminded him of her compassion for others.

Is there any way she could not fall in love with this man? With or Without You became their song. They were married eighteen months later.

Kate is also a Carrie Underwood fan. One of her favorites is Blown Away. This song tells a story so similar to the ones she hears from many of her psychotherapy clients.

(Note: a bit of a spoiler coming up if you haven’t read any of the Kate Huntington books yet.)

When her beloved Eddie is senselessly killed (Book 1, Multiple Motives), Kate assumes that romance is a thing of the past in her life.

A little over a year later, she crosses paths again with the bodyguard who protected her from Ed’s killer. While they are helping Kate’s friend, Rob Franklin, clear his aunt of murder charges, Skip Canfield is trying to convince Kate to go out with him. She is sorely tempted (he’s a hunk), but her grief is still too fresh. Skip tells Kate that he’s a “very patient man.” (Book 2, Ill-Timed Entanglements)

Skip was raised in Texas on a steady diet of country western music. During that same summer he re-connects with Kate, I’ll Wait For You is released by Joe Nichols. This song resonates for Skip on so many levels (If you’ve read Book 3, Family Fallacies, you’ll understand why).

Have some tissues handy. This one’s a tear-jerker.

Joe Nichols – I’ll Wait For You

While courting Kate through Family Fallacies, Skip converts her to an appreciation of country music. I’ll Wait for You becomes their song. Kate does have a penchant for making men wait, doesn’t she?

Pop singer, Katy Perry, is the most recent addition to Kate’s favorite artists’ list, after stumbling on a You Tube video of her 2010 hit, Firework. At first Kate thought the song was a little cheesy, but then she got caught up in its self-esteem boosting message.

Her favorite Perry song, however, is Part of Me, because it portrays the “tough chick” persona that Kate always finds intriguing. Perhaps she wishes she were a little more kick-ass herself. (See Book 6, Zero Hero, to see if this comes to pass).

I hope you’ve enjoyed Kate Huntington’s rather eclectic playlist.

Hubs is Hobbling Along (and Zero Hero is out in paperback)

My husband has been home from the hospital for almost a week now, with his new hip. Already he is able to take short walks, and his pain is so much less than it was before the surgery.

Being a caretaker is not as hard as I thought it would be, but it is time-consuming. So not much writing happening right now.

More on my thoughts regarding taking care of one’s spouse after surgery will be coming up in a couple weeks on my blog over at misterio press.

But I do have some book-related news. Zero Hero is out in paperback! I will have Multiple Motives out in paperback as well, as soon as the patient is a tad more self-sufficient.

Here’s the link for the paperback and Amazon has it discounted at the moment for just $7.52. Also you can get the e-book along with the paperback for only an additional $0.99 through Amazon’s new Matchbook program.

COLLATERAL CASUALTIES Cover Reveal

Drum roll please!!!

Here is the awesome cover for Book 5. It will be out in two to three weeks, and my beta readers tell me it is the best one yet. Below the cover is the blurb.

Told ya it was awesome! Thank you, Martina Dalton of The Authors’ Redroom.

COLLATERAL CASUALTIES, A Kate Huntington Mystery (Book 5)

When a former client reaches out to psychotherapist Kate Huntington and reveals a foreign diplomat’s dark secret, then dies of ‘natural causes’ just days later, Kate isn’t sure what to think. Was the man delusional or is she now privy to dangerous information?

Soon she discovers her client was totally sane… and he was murdered. Someone is now trying to eliminate her, and anyone and everyone she might have told. Forced into hiding, she and her husband, Skip, along with the operatives of his private investigating agency, struggle to stay one step ahead of a ruthless killer.

Skip and his P.I. partner are good investigators, but this time they may be in over their heads… and they all could end up drowning in this sea of international intrigue.

Like all the books in the series, this is also designed to work well as a stand-alone.

I’m currently hard at work on Book 6 (about two-thirds through first draft) and have started the next Kate on Vacation novella. I also have an outline for Book 7, but I’m resisting the temptation to work on it until I have the other two projects completed.

My Writer’s Retreat/Summer Cottage Got a Facelift!

My brother and I just spent a week in Maryland painting my little summer cottage up there.  Now it looks so cute, I can’t wait to go up for a writing retreat. I wrote the first draft of Celebrity Status up there two summers ago,  in less than a week! It’s amazing how much writing I can get done when it’s just me, my dog and my computer (with crappy internet so I can’t procrastinate on social media).

Here are the before, in progress and after pictures of the place:

The 1st Kate on Vacation Novella is Out

I am thrilled to announce my NEW RELEASE,

An UNSAINTLY SEASON in St. AUGUSTINE, A Kate on Vacation Mystery

(Note to Self: If you want to write a Christmas story, start in August, not November.)

book cover

I decided to go ahead and release this now for several reasons. One, although it’s set at Christmas time, it is not a Christmas story per se. It’s a mystery.

Two, chronologically in Kate Huntington’s life, this story falls between CELEBRITY STATUS (released last November) which occurs in Spring/Summer 2010, and COLLATERAL CASUALTIES (to be released soon) which occurs in the Fall of 2011.

Three, I really wanted to get this little parallel series of novellas about Kate’s adventures while on vacation off the ground. Because I have two more novellas in the series at least partially outlined: Cruel Capers on the Caribbean and Missing on Maui. (I am also diligently working on the next full-length novel, ZERO HERO.)

Blurb for An UNSAINTLY SEASON in St. AUGUSTINE:

Even on vacation, Kate Huntington can’t seem to avoid other people’s troubles. While in St. Augustine, Florida for the Christmas holidays, she and her PI husband get caught up in trying to find a friend of Kate’s parents who’s gone missing. They soon discover that this isn’t just a case of a senior citizen wandering off. Can they reunite the elderly man with his wife before Christmas, or will others who mean him harm find him first?

This is the first of a series of novella-length mysteries with a cozy flavor to them. They feature the same characters from the Kate Huntington Mystery series. These are intended to be light, suspenseful reads that also allow the reader to travel vicariously to interesting and sometimes exotic places.

Available as an e-book for just $1.99 on:

AMAZON    and    BARNES & NOBLE

Enjoy!

New Cover for ILL-TIMED ENTANGLEMENTS

I know a lot of my readers really love the ILL-TIMED ENTANGLEMENTS cover. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on it.

BUT it doesn’t really match the other covers. When that book was published (Book 2) I hadn’t really established a pattern for the covers. But now…

So here is the brand new cover for ILL-TIMED, that makes it look more like a true member of the series, instead of the stepchild of the group. 🙂

Celebrity Status, A Kate Huntington Mystery

Kate is now married to Skip Canfield, the man who patiently courted her through the last two books in this mystery series, and life is good. Skip’s private investigating agency, Canfield and Hernandez, may be doing a little too well, however. They have attracted their first celebrity client, a pop singer whose anonymous stalker has a twisted concept of love. Before Skip realizes just how twisted, he involves first his psychotherapist wife and then their lawyer friend, Rob Franklin, in the case.

Soon they are being hounded by paparazzi and someone is planting evidence to convince Skip that Kate and Rob are lovers. As they try to protect their relationship and family from this onslaught of unwanted attention, as well as a stalker who will stop at  nothing to remove the obstacles in his path, Kate and Skip struggle with the reality that you can’t always keep those you love from harm.
